Watched a lot of college wrestling today. I realized that getting up off the bottom, and bottom wrestling general is just about attitude. There isn’t a certain move that will magically get you off the bottom. Just like there isn’t a move that will take your opponent down every time, or a move to pin your opponent every time.
There is a lot of bottom technique. A lot of escapes. A lot of reversals. Without the attitude and the confidence of “I’m going to get to my feet, no matter what” you probably won’t get off the bottom. This also comes back to mental toughness. If you get taken down, you gotta know that you can get up and face the guy and escape. If not, the guy is going to pound your face in the mat and turn you. You gotta be able to come off the bottom.
I’m choosing to work on a tripod stand up. I’ve watched Mike Evans of Iowa and Matt McDonough hit it a few times and I really liked it, and I’m taller so I think it will work well.
Something hit me and I’m starting to feel like I’m getting my edge back. I think a lot of it was I lost interest in the sport, and got a little bit less tough. Wrestling Payson, witnessing the ass whooping we got I realized if I’m going to take state or place, I’m going to have to be tough. I’m going to have to be confident. So, I thought about this all day. Getting off bottom, is about attitude. I Will Come Off Bottom. I Will Not Die On Bottom. I Will Not Get Pinned. I Will Get Up.
Between working on gaining this attitude and getting my edge and mental toughness back, and then working on one escape, I plan to be able to come off bottom.
I also plan to work on my conditioning a lot in the next month.
Mental toughness + Conditioning + Extra Technique Work = Confidence
Confidence = More wins.
This was my thought for the day. Hope you liked it. Feel free to comment. Peace
Wrestled the Payson Lions. They were the 4A State Runner ups last year and the 2009 and 2010 4A State Champions. I wrestled JV. I pinned my kid in the third period. Score before that was 9 to 2. Been sick with the flu. Threw up before and after my match. Had a high fever, body aches and that whole deal ha. Record for this season advances to 12 wins, 10 losses.
1/13 and 1/14
Woke up and still had a high fever, still was throwing up. Didn’t wrestle at the Rocky Mountain Rumble. Missed the biggest tournament of the year. I would have improved the most here. But, yesterday I was out of gas by the end of the third period. I know I’m not in bad shape. I go harder than everyone in the room. Always the first done with sprints and first in all conditioning drills. Being sick took it out of me. Throwing up a lot probably didn’t help either. I think I could have won or placed at the JV Rocky Mountain Rumble had I felt good. I missed my chance. Next year, I will have to place in the Varsity Rocky Mountain Rumble.
I need to step it up. Next week we only have two practices before we duel Spanish Fork. No school or practice on Monday. I plan to run on Monday, I also plan to run on Tuesday. I’m going to do sprints on Monday, or maybe go 800m three rounds for time. Then on Tuesday, I will go for a long distance run. From here on out, I really need to buckle down and stay after to work on my techniques, to get in better shape and become an overall better wrestler. I know I’ve said it before and end up not doing it, but for me to qualify and place at the State Championships, I have to do it. I can’t waste anymore time.
wrestled jv tonight. had two matches because they had 3 138s I beat both of them. Scored two pins. The first match went into the third and coach told me he had been wrestling a while but i was dominating the whole match and he just quit in the third and i pinned him in a half. next match, pinned the kid a few seconds into the second with a half. had like 8 takedowns tonight. i’ll have to watch teh film and count them to be sure
practice was good today. long, but good. got my weight off. was way under, like 2.3lbs under. so i got to drink some more. practice was a warm up, drilling shots and takedowns, then we wrestled live in groups, switching in and out, then we wrestled a match. during the live group wrestling, i was beating everyone. i gave up a few shitty takedowns that i shouldn’t have, but i’ll work on it. with a cold and a hurt knee i think i could have beat cruz today and wrestled varsity tomorrow but coach doesn’t want me or cruz to hurt our knees anymore than they already are, so i’m wrestling jv for the carbon duel tomorrow.
my goal is to score 7+ takedowns and win by pin or technical fall. i worked on my inside cradle today a little bit and feel good with it, still need to work on my crossface cradle a little bit more. don’t feel as comfortable with it as i do my inside cradle, but i think tomorrow should be a good one. not sure what i’m doing for the manti tournament whether i will wrestle jv or on the independent team. either way, i’m excited to wrestle. although, i’d rather it be against top competition.
practice went okay today. i’ve got a cold that has to mess with my conditioning and my knee is still a little tender. still went hard and got it done though. drilled a lot today, on the feet going light and then top/bottom going 100% i’m really starting to like short sits and then getting hand control and hip heisting out, or even standing up if i have to, its a good way to create motion on the bottom. been working with some over collar shrug stuff too. i like controlling both sides of the tie, but not very many people let you control both sides, they try to free wrists and fight inside, so if someone takes away my inside collar, i worked on an over collar shrug to a pick and then a low level, throw by type of attack.
wrestled a match in practice today. took my kid down with an over collar shrug to pick, cut him, took him down with a double leg, pinned him in a half. started back up, took him down with another over collar shrug to pick. time ran out. i went down, short sit and hip heisted out and went right back to looking for takedowns. hit a decent low single, cut him, hit a good double leg, good high c, time ran out, he went down, i turned him again with legs in, power halfed and cross faced, let him up, he shot in, i whizzered hard and stuck him again just by keeping my whizzer and hipping into him until i got him on his back. had to do an overtime period, i hit a sweet head snap into a double leg with a trip finish. kid’s not great but he’s not horrible either, he’s wrestling varsity at 126 but the weight cut regulations made him go 132 for a few weeks so he weighed about 132 and i weighed about 138 when we wrestled.
tomorrow should be an easy practice, drilling, getting weight off, maybe a live match or two. then we duel carbon on thursday.
I wanna be like Gable. I love the technique of John Smith and the Russians. But more so than that, I like Gable’s work horse style. It fits my personality.
The biggest belief in life and in wrestling that I have is hard work will pay off sooner or later as long as you keep doing it and stay persistent.
After this wrestling dual and tournament, I’m going to be like Gable as much as I can in the wrestling room and out of it. I will work as hard as I can and a little bit harder in the room. I will work after practice on technique. I will watch film after that. And I will work out two to three times a day. Working on strength and conditioning. just straight up, basic, no shit, hard work and perserverance.
Make me like Gable. Make my body a slave to discipline. Make me a work horse. Make me an animal.
today was supposed to be a lighter practice, but i went with chad and he went hard the whole time but i scored a lot of takedowns. tons of low singles, didn’t work much from the tie up. except for a double leg and a high crotch.
wrestled a lot and was way under weight, so i got to eat and drink a lot of water tonight. probably get to eat some breakfast. i’m wrestling varsity tomorrow for sure. i went hard in practice this week. i know i’m ready. i know i can hang with the best. i know i can win. i’ll use my motion and circle around him until he reaches and if it’s there i’ll go high crotch or double leg, if it’s not i’m circle him until my low single is there, if i can snap him hard in the tie, i’ll look for my pick.
all i want to do is be successful. lately i’ve been getting furious in practice and just scoring off shear craziness and its helped when i need to score points and i end up escaping off bottom or reversing them or getting a take down when i’m in deep on the legs and they are defending good. i’m going to win. WAR NORTH SANPETE.
