dueled Spanish Fork on thursday. We won. I won both my jv matches. First match I was beating the kid 16 to 2 when I pinned him. next match i teched the kid. Domination. Now if I could just do that on varsity level kids all the time.
Few more weeks of wrestling left. Gotta get it done this season.
had a good practice. drilled with chad. went good, he’s flexible and a scrambler so scoring is tough but i manage to score. just have to watch out for his arm throws. wrestled in a match with chad also, first period he scored a takedown, i escaped. second period, i escaped, no other action. third period, he escapes i take him down and turn him for two. i won 4 to 3. next match i wrestled in practice was against brady, first period i scored a takedown and three near fall and he escaped. second period, i escaped and scored another takedown. third period, he got a reversal and i got an escape. 9 to 3 was the score.
doing better, starting to get it back. i woulda scored one more takedown on brady but i hit my cheekbone on his knee and split open pretty good. blood time. but overall it was a good practice
Had practice today. My partner was a lot heavier than me, but also basically our only chance of having a state champion wrestler this year. I wrestle 138, he wrestles 182. He doesn’t cut so it was only about 40 pound difference and I’m flexible and quick enough that I could use it against him.
During live drills we went about 50-50 with him winning some, and me winning some.
After drills, we did a live match before conditioning. I wrestled him still. He took me down from a front headlock. Held me down the whole first period. Second period, I was stuck on bottom for almost the whole first half of the period, probably about 45 seconds or so. Got to my tripod and got out. He basically stalled for 30 – 45 seconds, I got very offensive. I hit a few over collar shrugs, missed the single and ankle pick from it, barely. I missed it probably 3 – 5 times. With ten seconds left, I hit a duck under but couldn’t get him on the mat before time ran out. Score: 2 to 1 going into the third. He chose down. Ran my spiral and got legs in, held him down the whole period. He bellied out and didn’t work. I was trying to work a power half series almost the whole time, I switched to a Guillotine but couldn’t get it, went back to my power half series. He stalled the whole time, I switched from cross body to parallel leg riding and just couldn’t manage to turn him. Final score: 2 to 1. I probably should have cut him and looked for the takedown, but since he was about 45 pounds heavier than me I don’t think I did too bad.
Looking to beat him by the end of the year.

Nothing too fancy here on either day, just wanted to start working out a little bit more on my own. Starting out light, don’t want to get burnt out. Need to start doing burpees again. I need to get in better shape. Lately I just feel slow on my feet and tired when wrestling. I should be destroying every kid in the practice room and on the mat in competition, but I feel slow and sluggish. Going to stay after this week and drill a little bit. Probably run some sprints and bear crawls, maybe some tuck jumps, etc to get my footwork back.
practice was alright today. i’ve had diarrhea all day and a cold on top of that, think i might have the flu. my knee is tender and pretty stiff after practice. i favored my left knee mostly today. did alright, wrestled cruz and went all three periods with him and then we had over time, and top bottom over time, i beat him the the over time periods but he beat me 6 to 4 in the actual match. ran the wall sprints today like an animal, i was either first or second either time.
the whole team is sick i think, which sucks. it’s just passing on sickness pretty much. oh well. i walked out of practice at 139.1, had a powerade and some water, then had coffee with a friend, and some ramen. i’m probably about 142 right now, which isn’t bad.
today was supposed to be a lighter practice, but i went with chad and he went hard the whole time but i scored a lot of takedowns. tons of low singles, didn’t work much from the tie up. except for a double leg and a high crotch.
wrestled a lot and was way under weight, so i got to eat and drink a lot of water tonight. probably get to eat some breakfast. i’m wrestling varsity tomorrow for sure. i went hard in practice this week. i know i’m ready. i know i can hang with the best. i know i can win. i’ll use my motion and circle around him until he reaches and if it’s there i’ll go high crotch or double leg, if it’s not i’m circle him until my low single is there, if i can snap him hard in the tie, i’ll look for my pick.
all i want to do is be successful. lately i’ve been getting furious in practice and just scoring off shear craziness and its helped when i need to score points and i end up escaping off bottom or reversing them or getting a take down when i’m in deep on the legs and they are defending good. i’m going to win. WAR NORTH SANPETE.
had a hard practice today. lost 6 pounds in sweats and a t shirt. lot of live drilling, live wrestling on the feet and ran a lot of sprints. i was the leader for most of the sprints. i really pushed myself. i want to do better. pretty sure i’m wrestling varsity this weekend because of the varsity kid’s knee.
we played king of the mat today, i placed top 5. even with the bigger guys, i hit a sweet duckunder on the varsity 195 kid, well, it was more of a boot scoot. we duel delta on thursday and we’ll be wrestling at the juab winter classic tournament, a 9 match round robin tournament. i’ve really been working on my outside shots, low singles. hit a lot of good low singles today and had a few decent picks. need to work on the tie up a little more, i’m not horrible but i could be a lot better. need to work on getting off bottom too. not very good there.
going to stay after practice tomorrow and work on coming up off the bottom, motion and creating angles in the tie up and then last, motion and creating angles; shooting outside the tie. i’m going to work on posting arms, looking for high crotches and doubles, also working on my stance and motion to get my low singles and finishing out the back door because at millard, i got into the legs deep and couldn’t finish out the back door, i would have scored 6 more points with it and probably could have majored the kid.
anyways, i’m out for the night. peace

had practice today.
we didn’t reallu go live aside from a few top/bottom drills that i dominated. i didn’t get turned and i scored a turn every time except for once. then we ran a lot of stairs.
i get a wrestle off with cruz tomorrow. can’t fuck this time up. he doesn’t have a lot of heart, so if i can score the first takedown and ride him out for the period, maybe score off a cheap tilt, even if its just for a 2 count and build a lead. even a 4 – 0 lead going into the second will break him, he’s not in very good shape either, so as long as i just wrestle smart, build a lead, look for pins, i should be good. in the third period, depending on how broke he is mentally, or if he’s really tired i might start the takedown and cut game. we’ll see.
the paleo diet isn’t really working out. started today off good. had two overhard eggs with a tangerine and some raspberries. nice breakfast, filled me up. at lunch, i was pretty hungry and ended up eating school lunch – breaded chicken sandwich with fries – not the most cave man-esque food. for dinner, i had some grilled chicken (about 4oz) with some cucumber and celery and a lot of water.not too bad except for lunch, its just hard because there’s no where i can really go to get cave man food. might have to start bringing it from home.
wrote my goals down tonight. “LAYNE KUBOTA 3A 2012 STATE CHAMPION” “I WILL DESTROY CRUZ” “I WILL BE VARSITY” and “LAYNE KUBOTA WIN by TF OVER CRUZ” Wrote them all down several times each. Mostly the state champion one. Also did some mediating, first I cleared my mind and after that I just visualized beating everyone in my weight class at our school and making varsity. I plan on doing this more through the season, as the season goes on, it will shift to beating everyone. Period.
but, for now, i’m out. i’ll keep you updated. peace.
